Around 1973, a number of botanical inventory surveys were carried out to lay the foundation for a large-scale ecotope mapping project as part of a district-wide environmental research project within the Integral Structure Plan of the North. Botanical research was only carried out in high-value ecological and endangered areas. This was described by Reijnen and De Boer (1978, page 11). The field research methods were described by Smittenberg et al. (1977).

Apart from these selection plots, other square kilometre plots are also examined, preferably in areas for which there is no inventory data.
